PARISH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open doors.
Circa 1840 -
Around 1815 a class of the Methodist Episcopal Church was formed, meeting at the school house, "Mexico District #1". In 1840-41 a frame church was built by John Becker on the present property, being donated by Mr. Becker. The edifice was dedicated in 1841 by Congregational and Lutheran Pastors. It was called Congregational but used by Baptists, Presbyterians, and Lutherans as they desired for several years until about 1868 when the Methodist Episcopal Society refurbished (it has been said "stole it") the building ($1,800) and rededicated it on December 8,1869. It was during the 1868-1869 period when it became known as the Methodist Church. The first Pastor of record was Rev. A. J. Cowles, 1868 - 1871.
Incidentally, Syracuse University was chartered March 30, 1870 under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church as a non-denominational, privately endowed center of higher learning.
The Church was again remodeled and enlarged in 1888 which added a Sunday school facility and increased seating capacity to 300, ($3,200).
December 17, 1899 -
On this date, the Church building was destroyed by fire. This is also said to be the beginning of the Parish Volunteer Fire Department. The current structure was erected the following year at a cost of $ 6,340 and was dedicated on Jan 31, 1901. Though most plaster has been replaced with drywall, the shingles no longer wooden, electricity replaces the lanterns, and the clapboard has been replaced with vinyl the structure appears as it did then. The beautiful windows and wooden pews, the high tin ceiling and hand placed stone foundation have not changed. Though most are dressed more casually, and few walk or come to Church by horse, the members of the congregation are still as welcoming and friendly as ever. Please take a Sunday drive, visit our Church and attend our worship service. We really would like to have you with us.
